New Superintendent Anthony Amato will take on Stockton Unified’s 54% dropout rate


Superintendent Anthony Amato is embarking upon a yearlong planning process that ultimately will reform Stockton Unified’s four comprehensive high schools.

Amato said his plan includes utilizing a $3.4 million “small learning communities” federal grant that earlier this year was mired in controversy as a key component for changes he hopes will lower the district’s dreadful graduation rates and increase student achievement.

and he gets bold…

“High school reform is definitely something that every major urban center is going through, and part of that is academies,” Amato said. ”We have a 54 percent dropout rate in Stockton. If we dare continue the way we’re continuing, then it’s absolute shame on us.”
