Galt Anti-Gang/Anti-Drug Sales Tax Increase Goes For Final Vote Thursday

The Galt City Council will cast the final vote this Thursday to place a half-cent sales tax measure on the ballot in November. Thursdays vote will be the culmination of nearly a year of consensus building throughout the community, involving business leaders, community activists, civic leaders and more.

Early in the process, the City of Galt engaged local groups in discussions to address concerns and avoid the spread of misinformation. Some of the groups involved in discussions include the Galt Chamber of Commerce, the Galt elementary and high school districts, and the Galt Police Officers Association.

During preliminary talks with these local groups, it became evident that public support for a sales tax increase would require language written into the measure that specifically allocated the funds for putting more officers on the streets. Also, it was apparent that the measure should provide for public oversight and strict rules on how additional funds collected could be allocated.

In response to the input we received from the community, we drafted a measure that is outlined below:

* Half Cent Anti Gang/Anti Drug sales tax increase
* Creation of a new oversight committee, from within the community, to oversee spending
* All funds legally earmarked for putting more officers on the streets and making the capital purchases required to accommodate them (additional cars, weapons, dispatchers, etc.) and removing graffiti
* Requires city to maintain current funding levels for police services to prevent back-filling of additional revenue
* Immediately puts three officers on the streets
* Immediately adds a school resource officer
* Immediately allocates $30,000 a year for community graffiti abatement
* In year two, two additional patrol officers are added
* In year two, one Narcotics Task Force officer is added

By addressing the concerns brought forward by the many groups and individuals that we sought input from, the measure has received the support of several key local organizations, including the Chamber of Commerce. I feel confident that we are placing a sales tax measure on the ballot that is free of loop holes and pork. I strongly encourage community members to attend tomorrow nights meeting and have any questions answered directly. The meeting is scheduled for 7:00PM at City Hall.
