Sacramento Bee Endorses Johnson
The Sacramento Bee today made a bold move today by endorsing Kevin Johnson for Mayor of Sacramento. From my point of view Mayor Fargo should just wave the white flag and head home.
The hard part for incumbents in a “change” election is that they are swimming against the political tide. Fargo would have had difficulties no matter the overall mood of the electorate because of the limits her personality places on her ability to connect with the electorate. This year, the atmospherics of an election held in this national environment makes it nearly impossible for her to win.
The one thing that could have saved Fargo is if third parties like the Sacramento Bee, Chamber of Commerce, incumbent elected officials, and community leaders step up to defend her record. They did not do that. Not at all. The Chamber, Sacramento Bee, many community leaders, and a host of elected officials in the region have sided with Johnson.
Many will argue that the race was over after the results of the primary were announced. That may be the case but they are really over today.

Fargo is toast! Stick a fork in her, she’s done. While I personally have some reservations about Johnson, I do think it is time for change in Sacramento. Quite frankly, we’ve gotta take the best of the worst…

I wouldn’t count Heather out just yet. Soon, the public will be informed about just what KJ has been up to. I know for some people, integrity doesn’t matter. For the sake of change, they’ll take anything over the same ol’ same ol’. That can be a dangerous recipe for disaster.

Uh, Susie, you are widely quoted across the state today in an Associated Press that Kevin Johnson was going to win because of his energy and charisma. Was that another Susie Shields, supporter of Heather Fargo?

Mr. Maviglio: I have never said I thought KJ would win. I spoke to Judy back in early Oct. and no way did I say such a thing. I did say it was possible because people didn’t know the facts. I am thrilled that you felt strongly enough to put little ol housewife, mommy me out there. Do I scare you?

You do have trouble with the truth, don’t you? Here’s your quote from the Associated Press:
I think he’ll win, said Susie Shields, a 43-year-old Fargo supporter. He’s very confident. And charm goes a long way.

Trouble with the truth? You made me giggle. Do you have a mirror handy? No, no trouble. The quote was taken out of context just like you claim with KJ’s Bloomberg quote. His charisma is more in line with the leaders of WACO and Jonestown. Not always a good thing.

No incumbent elected officials have stepped up to defend Fargo? Virtually every Democratic elected official in the region has endorsed Heather Fargo. The list is topped by the big three D’s--Doris, (Matsui), Dave (Jones) and Darrell (Steinberg). It’s Johnson who failed to secure the support of those in the Democratic party in which he claims membership. Listen for ads from Dave and Darrell next week.

If you are the real Susie (taking you at your word - it is the internets you know)- I found that AP Quote to be very interesting. I had a hunch that Judy is connected to Team Kj, no proof though. And, I thought that it was unethical for her to end the piece like that. Judy Used to work for the Bee. IM guessing she lives in Sac and that She’s probably voting for KJ. (all my conjecture) Steve can correct me if im wrong.
I would have done a piece on it but had other things on the burner.
No underhandedness implied Steve. I just thought that it was a very Judy-opinion-leaning piece. And I guess that’s her choice.
Now, if you said that statement to a reporter Susie - well, even in confidence sometimes that happens…

Hi Jason-
I did not say that particular statement to Judy. I did call her on that and told her that I said it was “possible” he could win because people were influenced by his charisma and charm rather than actual facts. I talked to her Sept.3 and she didn’t even report until 5 weeks later. She was not recording me and was writing in shorthand.I was aware of what I was saying. I would never, ever make a definative statement like that. Unfortunately, she has the power of the pen but I did speak to her today and let her know she misquoted me and I expected a retraction. We’ll see. Not crossing my fingers…
