Why Lodi News Sentinel (LNS) readership is down.

On August 23, 2008, Marty Weybret wrote in his paper an opinion about his failing newspaper and internet site. I’ve been out walking precincts over the past 3 weeks. Last week I conducted an informal survey as I went door to door and here is what some of the LNS critics had to say.

“Why don’t they report the news instead of his (Marty) own opinion, which is what all the reporters do.”

“The LNS is out of touch with the community…caters to the white bread of Lodi.”

“They (LNS) crucify people in the newspaper...just makes me angry, I don’t want to read that trash.”

“He (Marty) was the #1 polluter in the ground water contamination in the City of Lodi. He paid 1 million dollars, his insurance paid 1 million, and the citizens of Lodi paid 45 million. Roughly $10 dollars a month is what you want for your paper. I have to pay the 10 dollars a month on my City bill to clean his (LNS) mess up or the City will shut off my utilities. Water is more important than his paper.”

“If the Sentinel (LNS) didn’t read like the National Enquirer, than maybe serious readers would want to read it.”

“Pro city hall…(LNS) refuses to print any info with opposing viewpoints.”

“You’re (Marty) in the wrong business, you can’t stand anyone having a different opinion than yourself.”

“I called to place an ad and wanted it a specific way. I even made a mock up with the picture and text. My printed ad cost double what it was 2 years ago and I still didn’t get what I paid for. The rude woman told me, ‘Sorry we’ll give you 10% off on your next ad.”

“They (LNS) read The Record and then decide what to print in the LNS the next day.”

Problem: Marty - you have paradigm paralysis, only one way to do things.

Solution: Embrace change, don’t fear it. Learn from mistakes.

Ideas: What has worked for the paper?

1. This is a local paper and should contain more local news. This is a huge advantage over other papers.

2. Report the story without personal bias. Let the readers reach their own conclusion from informative, factual reporting.

3. Teasers on the front page to entice me to buy the paper.

4. Steve Mann had a local gossip column that was very popular. Tidbits from unknown staff members are not interesting.

5. Society page, club news-photos a la Darlyne Kooyman. The entire family wants a copy of the LNS when there are pictures of their son or daughter at the school spaghetti feed. Consider embracing 4-H clubs, Masonic Lodge, Women’s Club, garden club, church groups etc., so they can post a monthly calendar of events and group activity-pictures on your internet.

6. The opinions of the bloggers are subject to staff approval. Opposing viewpoints are not posted.

Here a few more ideas:

1. Lodi has changed as a city. One-third of the population is Hispanic, who have their own idea of what is news. I’ve heard people say that if the paper came out bilingual, they wouldn’t buy it. However, the demand is real and other entrepreneurs are filling in the void made by the LNS. http://www.vidaenelvalle.com is a regional Spanish/English paper and website. The sample paper delivered to my house covered issues like Latino sports, deadly working conditions, water bonds, interview with real people concerning poor air quality, social events, politics and entertainment just to name a few.

2. I’d pay extra not to have all those inserts and advertisements. I toss them straight into the recycle bin. To those that enjoy the ads and coupons, that is fine; however, I think there are a number of people that would be happy to pay not to get the advertisements.

3. The Record posts links to other papers, blogs, and internet news. The LNS has refused to embrace this offer by sites like Capitalelector.com.

Your article theme was, “Buy my paper or it’s your fault I have to fire an employee. I take no responsibility for the failing newspaper. I’m a poor little rich kid, feel sorry for me or I’ll fire another employee!”

Marty learn a lesson from the Swiss. In 1968, 65% of the watch market was produced and sold by the Swiss. The Swiss received 90% of the industry profits. When quartz watches first hit the market, the Swiss watchmakers and dealers scoffed and ridiculed the newest member to the marketplace, “Where are all the components? Consumers would never buy such an inferior product. It’s just a passing novelty.” Within 10 years, the Swiss were manufacturing 10% of the watch market and receiving 20% of the industry profits. They passed off technology. Fifty thousand, of the 65 thousand, jobs were lost in 1968.

Just like the skilled workers in Sweden who lost their jobs because of unwillingness to change, discrediting new ideas, lack of vision by management, the LNS employees are subject to the same fate as the watch makers.

Jane, listening to the Weybret’s is like living back in the 60’s. They are so afraid to expose or hurt the feelings of the good ol’ boys klan in and around Lodi and until they can face the real facts with all the scheming by the good ol’ boys and families like themselves that have been given most of what they have and just merely taken whatever else they want are now looked down upon as the plain, common criminals they are.
The Hispanic and working class people in Lodi are completely left out of the equation because the Weybret’s and their national enquirer type paper know that if we all were informed by some accountable and truthful journalism, we wouldn’t have to put up with the wealthy culture’s hand picked council and management teams year after year. The real citizens of Lodi wouldn’t elect duds like Hansen, Johnson, Katzakian and Hitchcock to spend their city monies on their friends and businesses constantly money grubbing schemes.
It’s time the Weybret’s and Katzakian stand up and pay their share of the ground pollution they themselves caused by throwing those chemicals out their back doors onto the ground to pollute our groundwater. Just who do you think let them get away with this meagerly settlement? It was your own city manager, city council and city attorney. Much of this was spearheaded by your good ol’ boy retired ex- police chief, Hansen.
And Hansen is the same one, along with Hitchcock that took it upon themselves to buy that electrical power that broke the back of LEUD and the city itself financially. Did you see any reference to this boondoggle anywhere in your local paper? No, you didn’t and you never will read any adverse articles involving any of the Lodi high-rollers and “movers and shakers.”
Is it losers like these you want controlling your city and pandering to their realtor and developer friends and business partners?
If it weren’t for Madam Mayor Mounce being a council representative and not afraid to speak up for the real citizens of Lodi, this town would be nothing more than a 2buck Chuck community.
C’mon, Marty and Richard, give us the truth and quit spinning and lying and instead of being cowardly weasels, become real media people and just merely give us the truth to form our own opinion on.

Lodi councilperson Bob Johnson, I thought you were going to be one of the Lodi bigshot blogger contributors on this website? Why have you pulled your name from the list? I see Ms. Mounce, Ms. Lea., Mr Beckman and you just disappear into the campaign spotlight? Are you afraid to voice your opinions here and refuse to ever be proven wrong? Maybe the responses to any issue you spin on will only bring more adverse re-election blogs about your realtor-developer pandering? You better hope your friends, Marty and Rich, at the local paper keep making you look good, because their spin about you and your cronies are the only thing to get you re-elected.
Nice going Lodi News-Sentinel. Better hope councilman-realtor Bob is re-elected or much of your real estate and good ol’ boys advertising revenue will go POOF!
And why is it that you use children to deliver your newspapers when there are so many homeless, poor and destitue adults on the eastside alone that would love to have that small source of income? Isn’t that job discrimination? But then you’d have to pay those adults an honest wage, wouldn’t you? Think about it. That’s going pretty low to pinch a penny. Open those routes to adults that are experiencing hard times.

Marty and Rich have banned me three times from their blogs, and those blog names are still banned to this day, and those same blogs were copied and pasted and entered in the Stockton Record the same day as the News-Sentimental, er Sentinel. Marty and Rich are so very afraid of the good ol’ boys that it’s very pathetic. Everyone knows I blog there as TandC, or variations thereof, until I was banned and they switched their registration process over and let one of their city cheerleaders have my blog name while I was suspended. I’m like you, Jason, tired of the owners of Lodi pulling the strings on the planning commission and the city council and with the blairbot in their back pocket, dominate, bully, buy and control Lodi.

Marty and rich, grow some hair and stand up for yourself and your own beliefs, and not what you’re told or paid to do.

And thank you so much Ms. Jane Lea for bringing this cowardly newspaper to the forefront. Their cowardice and favoritism cost them their readership. Who really gives a damn about some wealthy penny pinchers who can afford a $150 brick at Hutchins Square? Or a Galt mayor caught stealing water, who blames all of Galt’s woes on a fine upstanding young man, and Mayor, and his new youthful way of thinking the old fogies don’t understand.

That’s what’s wrong with politics today. It’s a modern, young world and the older politicians are so medicated up just to keep them ticking, they can’t keep up with the new world and telecommunication age. When our presidential candidate says he has to learn how to use a computer, things aren’t looking too good for him to get my vote. This political world needs to transition imeediately to the new and younger way of thinking.

My opinion, Marty Weybret and Richard Hanner, Lodi News-Sentinel, since you won’t allow me to put it in your lowclass blogs for fear I may expose the real corruption you cover up every day.
“Edumacation, can’t wait for the meeting tomorrow night to see if the real Bozz will speak for himself or send one of his lapdogs out, like Pat Patrick or both, as last time?
And that’s why the city of Lodi hired Rad Bartlam,in the interim, to bring the superWalmart and Reynolds Ranch projects in. He’s familiar with them both and had done extensive work on them before being “fired” the first time because he couldn’t stand Manager King and he was either asked to leave or decided to leave on his own. And, voila, now he’s back for some unknown reason. Just how can this Gillespie project change even come to the table before the new general plan is even approved? And the swap of a school for an old folks home? I guess that’s what a graduated care center is, huh? what about the new EIR? Twice as many vehicle trips won’t affect the impact report? The three ayemeegos again will control this issue, and with Johnson and the Katzakian family deeply involved in the gob realty circle here, it’ll just take that single vote from Hansen to continue, and he’ll return one of his favors for later repayment.”
This blog has had my husband removed from the Lodi News-Sentinel blogs without warning. And the Sentinel wonders why only the gob’s read their trash.

This blog was rejected and my husband was again banned from your blogs without any warning whatsoever.

You, Marty and Fred Weybret and Richard Hanner, protect those above named parties and business and social friends of yours and theirs like they are going to close your paper down if you should even attempt to let anyone offend them. This same blog was acceptable at the Stockton Record, yet you banned someone for this same opinion. Last time he was banned for accusing your newspaper of using child labor to deliver your newspapers and not allowing out of work adults to hold these routes while you use little children at literally slave wages. And the third time my husband was banned for speaking out about the same developer and the group of schemers and the newspaper owner and editor who seem to be collaborating with them to perpetrate their never ending pyramid type schemes such as redevelopment and changing their articles to merely fluff full of spin to make these corrupt bamboozlers look like they’re trying to be honest this time. News-Sentinel, be truthful or be gone.

Bobserver, you don’t have any idea that it was really me that was banned unless you are the editor or owner of the ill-reputed Lodi News-Sentinel. I was hoping you would post a response here and open yourself up to the same ridicule you toward others on the Lodi blogs. So, yopu think Gillespie, Johnson, Katzakian, Hansen, Hanner&Weybret;of the Sentinel are not keeping their corrupt little games from Lodi citizens be-cause they merely don’t print the truths in the Lodi paper, owned by good ol’ boy daddy Fred Weybret? These younger generations of well established, well respected local owners of the Lodi city council and manager have given their family names and reputations something for their wealthy parents that have given them everything they have, to roll over in their graves about.
Why, bobserver, are you and three others the only ones on the Sentinel blogs that are constantly accusing all others of false accusations and lying? It was nice of you girls to tell another blogger, edumacation, to GFY for merely stating a truthful fact. Sir, you don’t disgrace any of us, only yourself and our non-existent ego. You are as described: like a little baby who takes their toys and goes home when things don’t go your way.
And, bobserver, many of these statements you accuse me of falsely making have even come from this blogsite, Lodi first, sjdc watch, calaware, aclu, etc. And just what blog(s) was I banned for? One time it was for accusing the News-Sentinel of using children to deliver their newspapers for well less than the minimum wage (other blogs addressing the same issue were just deleted before showing up) so why don’t you tell me for a fact that it was who is typing this blog that was, indeed, banned? I was also chastised for statements about King, dozens about Hansen fleecing Lodi on the power buy, and the three ayemeegos (Hansen, Johnson, Katzakian) for voting yes on all these issues that enrich themselves and their realtor, builder, contractor (Diede$Case$Katzakian$Geweke$Munson$Snider const.), developer and Delta college board friends. Just check their voting records on any of these issues. Are there any other builders beside these that have or have just finished projects recently? You want ot talk about corruption, then come out of your denial, bobserver, or will you and your cheerleaders, realty, patton, commonsense and whoa nellie tell me to go F myself, too? Bullying isn’t nice and won’t be tolerated, even from someone like you and your cheerleaders. You and your ideas and friends and attitude have currently spent Lodi, a town of about 60,000, $250,000,000 into debt. Your credibility is nil unless you face realty (pun intended) and come out of your denial.

Thanks, Jason, my friend, as I would expect to be banned for spreading lies or innuendo. I believe that many are aware that the city of Lodi is very corruptnot only at city hall and coucil, but the corruption is alive and well at the Lodi police. Councilman Hansen would have some first hand information on how that corruption was started and kept kindled. Perhaps the great Lodi News-Sentinel should have a nice front page interview with him and his purported great success as police chief and just what it was he was supposed to have accomplished. And manager King and his traveling secretary, Ms. Johl, the redevelopment and fund transferring specialists. These three are an integral part of Lodi’s $250,000,000 debt and should all be featured on front page interviews in the Lodi News-Sentinel as to how this town of 60,000 (more like 50,000 legal citizens) could be so far in debt. It couldn’t be that maybe Fred Weybret, the real owner, editor of the Sentinel, wouldn’t allow his fearful son and his editor to tell the real truth and offend one of the good ol’ boys and reveal the real truth about the backdoor and underhanded ways of the council, management and coverup by the News-Sentinel.

BOBserver, did you report these blogs like you do all others at the Lodi news blogsite that have a truth to tell about your corrupt leaders and cheering squad? Jason is a fair and honest person who also was ignored when warning everyone a few years back about the slicksters brought in to manage the city of Lodi after Hansen and council let the attorneys dupe them out of tens of millions of dollars and then turned around and let Fred Weybret and Phil Katzakian (a current council member) off the hook in the ground pollution cleanup for merely what paltry few dollars their insurers would pay. Then councilman, and right hand man for the Northern California Power Association, Hansen, bought that power with the NCPA (who duped him) that broke the back of the Lodi electric district and raised our rates the first time to the tune of 17%. The council, good ol’ boys and management still try to hide that fact to this day. Council persons Hansen and Hitchcock are indirectly linked to a majority of the $250,000,000 debt Lodi is currently owed. And now Manager King wants to go further into debt with redevelopment, to the tune of $500,000,000 debt limit. Isn’t it time we citizens say no to these debt mongers? With $250,000,000 current debt, it seems that each and every council and management position should be up for someone that actually knows that you can’t spend more than you have year after year and be financially solvent. Those non-interest bearing and low interest bearing accounts at Farmers&Merchants;bank need to be closed and invested with a REAL bank and not just a local bank that provides"courtesy service and underground accounts” for those who are wealthy or connected. The financial world is changing and it’s time for this town to earn and grow for their citizens and not the good ol’ boys, developers, wealthy families and those who control it with their bullying and scare tactics. Thank you Jason, and the Capitalelector for letting us speak and voice our opinions here and granting us our right of free speech and not being like Marty Weybret and Richard Hanner and suppressing just any blogs that merely disagree with their or their controllers biased opinions.

Observer, I know you’re a business advocate by your guilty conscience and foolhardy replies concerning the corruption of the city of Lodi. So you really think city and Lodi LPD aren’t corrupted? Ask anyone outside of your little circle if you want to know the truth. Aren’t you the one that told edumacation to GFY? Or urged your buddy on? I’m a name caller? ROFLMAO So you don’t think the three ayemeegos voting for Gillespie’s completely changed project at Reynolds Ranch wasn’t a little tainted, with all those opponents and only Gillespie speaking up for the project? You and your three ayemeego associates have stepped over the bounds on this one as far as I’m concerned. This project is completely changed from the original, which was also changed before being approved and now changed again thanks to the three ayemeegos who rushed this through again and couldn’t wait, as suggested by the other two council persons, until a furhter study was made and to see if the original EIR was sufficient for those drastic changes. According to you, observer, Lodi is on such a great track. I don’t consider $250,000,000 in debt a real plus from these three ayemeegos and their city manager. At least it took councilman Bob Johnson 30 years of public service to get us that far in debt, while Hitchcock and Hansen only took 5 years or so. I’ve been working on a program with some officials in Stockton and have already been forewarned about the corruption and dishonesty amongst you and your city cheerleaders and how far into denial you are about the homeless and gangs in Lodi, just to start with. So I was wrong about the grand jury? This investigation isn’t over yet, so just keep waiting for that late night knock at your door when it’s time for the good ol’ boys to start answering questions and start snitching on one another to save their own souls. You’ll have a very hard time with what little credibility you have as long as you keep defending the four corrupt and greedy council members and keep on dissing Madam Mayor Mounce. If it weren’t for her honesty and candidness and actually asking questions no one can or will answer, this town would be in bankruptcy court right behind Vallejo. And your city politics impact local businesses because they subsidize businesses such as the Rosewood downtown and other good ol’ boys ventures and even held up the search for a contractor or developer to build a downtown hotel for 9 months or so for Mr. Munson from the Wine&Roses;(who also, I believe is the proprietor of the Rosewood) while he tried and failed to come up with a plan or money. Looks like F&M;bank is drying up for the local good ol’ boys? And $48,000 to your buddy, Tony Segale, to paint a small mural on the side of a private business on south Central Avenue. Money for the arts at 48K for a simple mural? Do I need go on Mr. Observer? What perks do you get from them for your cheerleading role? Have a good night, sir, you’ll be in my prayers.

Those same blogs that banned me were in the Stockton Record blogs without a problem, not even a warning, and others even had comments similar to them. This owners’ son and his editor have swept so many important and corrupt issues under the rug and that’s exactly why the only ones that subscribe to the Sentinel are the good ol’ boys and girls that kiss their butts or order them to keep their dirty deeds out of the paper. observer, this Bud’s for you,

The good ol’ boy network describes a system of social networking and perceptions alleged to exist prevalently among certain communities and social strata in the United States. Although the term originated in the South, these networks can be found throughout the U.S. and the rest of the Western world. It is typically taken to refer to informal legal, judicial, social, religious, business, and political associations among white males ("good ol’ boys"); however, in modern times can be composed of either or both sexes. In some areas, the good ol’ boy network is said to still exert considerable influence over many aspects of local government, business, and law enforcement. Usage of the term can often imply a wrongful exclusion of others from the network; however, often the emphasis is on inclusion of a member, as in, “doing a good ol’ boy a favor”.

Some negative effects of the good ol’ boy network are its exclusion of others, leading to leaders of a community possibly limiting business transactions to other elites, or to friends or acquaintances from within the network, to give friends better deals, and generally to reinforce traditional power structures over any other elements in the society.

Perceptions of religious and racial prejudice also endure, and the good ol’ boy network is sometimes seen as unique to WASPs (White Anglo-Saxon Protestants), with Catholics, Jews, and minority groups excluded. The network also functions like any other social network inasmuch as governmental, business, and professional connections and concessions often develop via mutual friendships and introductions established through the network.

Welcome to Lodi, observer.

If it weren’t for his editor, Mr. Hanner, Marty would be in the employment line or working for daddy at the corrupt water board or bureau, or whatever the heck it is that’s trying to extort money from the farmers for pumping water out of the ground or free water from Lodi to sell for a profit. Everyone is welcome to express their opinion, even you and I. There’s no daddy’s boy nor his puppet editor to censor or ban those they don’t agree with.
Why do you think the Sentinel is going under? They suckered the people of Galt to subscribe to their paper by creating a Galt news blitz a month or so back, including the front page articles about the council lady and her neighbors trying to contaminate Galt’s water supply by cross connecting their water to a vacant home and then in the month or so period Galt news was on the front page daily for some nonsensical issues that Lodians didn’t give a crap about. After Marty got those subscribers from Galt to subscribe long-term, the Galt news is on the back page or just plain left out where it belongs.
And you, observer, are the laughing stock of the Lodi blogs with your constant defensive blatherings each time someone has a negative opinion of the good ol’ boys and the corruption within Lodi. You just keep ranting how well things are in Lodi and how well the management team and council are doing and that Gillespie is Lodi’s saviour from heaven. Well, looks like they’ gotten over twice the number needed and didn’t even have to canvass half the town. Looks like the good ol’ boys will need a new cheerleading team now that you girls have let them down. Don’t forget, rahrah, sissboomBAH!

No, it wasn’t me.  I actually signed the petition.  I want to see this matter finally approved by the voters so the opponents can finally put it to rest.  Of course the voters of Lodi overwhelmingly approved the Super Walmart and that hasn’t happened.  You have posted under so many names you can’t keep track of which blog name said what.  Are you and emaducation sisters?  She just reprinted your September 24th post word for word in the LNS.  Good talking to you.....see you at HOC.  That’s why I know so much about you.

We didn’t approve a Walmart or a super Walmart. We approved a size limitation for any superstore that wants to locate on Snider corner. That’s what it’s all about isn’t it? The sale and destruction of more farmland that will make Lower Sac and Hwy. 12 gridlocked with traffic and more smog that this town can’t account for now that Gillespie and Reynolds Ranch have been given the go ahead for the retail space that was to be for superWalmart. Sounds like the family feud will be coming soon when Mr. Roger Khan replaces Bob Johnson on council next month and the we’ll have three nomeegos on council instead of the three ayemeegos, Hansen, Katzakian and Hansen, who’ve spent us $250,000,000 into debt and further each week.
You keep referring to the House of Coffees? Why don’t you introduce yourself to me? You afraid everyone will know who you and your pro-Lodi comments would laugh you down to Tillie’s with the good ol’ boys. I intentionally hang around for a while to see if you have the fortitude to say hello, but apparently you don’t. Just because we have differing opinions doesn’t mean a thing to me. Just makes for a better argument and great gab. Have a great day, observer, I’m looking forward to chatting with you one day. The coffee’s on me, too. Maybe Jason would like to accompany us.

I would rather you two fight it out here. It’s a lot more fun. But I do love free coffee.
